LEWISTON — Pine Street will be closed in front of City Hall overnight on Thursday and Friday while crews install lights and other equipment to illuminate the City Hall dome.
The street will be closed from Lisbon to Park streets for the duration of the work beginning Thursday morning and lasting into Friday. It includes car lanes and sidewalk traffic on the south side of Pine Street. The Pine Street entrance will be closed as well, although crews will make the handicapped ramp at that entrance available to people who need it.
Plans call for lighting up City Hall’s northern face and two small towers framing the larger tower, clock and cupola. The larger tower would also be lit on four sides, making it visible for miles.
That will give downtown Lewiston three illuminated landmarks, including the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul and the Franco-American Heritage Center.
The $27,000 project is being paid for by fundraising.
The road will be closed again Sept. 19 and 20 for the second phase of the project, although the city plans to leave at least one travel lane open on those days. Instead, 10 short-term parking spaces along Kennedy Park will be closed.
