PARIS —  The newly-formed Western Maine CoderDojo will hold its first meeting at the Paris Public Library for students age 7 to 17 from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18.

CoderDojo is a global movement of computer programming clubs that tries to turn students into creators of digital media, rather than just consumers.

In the process of designing and programming projects, young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically and work collaboratively.

At CoderDojo, kids will work in a casual, fun environment on projects of their choosing. Many people will start by using Scratch, a programming language and online community where they can create their own interactive stories, games and animations. They can also share creations with others around the world.

Scratch is a project of the MIT Media Lab and is available for free at www.scratch.mit.edu.

CoderDojo will be held every Wednesday at the same time. Those wishing may drop by at any point. Participants are asked to bring a laptop computer if possible.

Desktop computers are available at the library, but in limited numbers.
