SUMNER — The Sumner Food Bank, hosted at the Congregational Church of East Sumner, has expanded its facilities from sharing space in the church kitchen and Sunday School classrooms to a new addition constructed by local volunteers and finished by local volunteers and a youth team from Spotsylvania, Va., Presbyterian Church (SPC) during SPC’s annual youth trip to Sumner in late July.
Funds for construction of the addition were provided by grants from the Congregational Church of East Sumner, Hannaford Brothers Supermarkets, private donations and the town of Sumner.
The Food Bank is open 9 a.m. to noon every first and third Monday of the month and is staffed by volunteers from the church and town. It is available to all Sumner residents who meet federal guidelines, and is currently helping 42 families, with a monthly average of 24 families.
There is always a need for donations to help stock the food bank. Donations may be dropped off when the food bank is open or when the church is open for activities. Food Bank manager is Violet Enman, assisted by Steve Chesley.
Remaining tasks for the new Food Bank are to install a space heater for efficient winter heat and to replace the old freezers and refrigerator, which are used by the Food Bank. It is looking for assistance in purchasing the items and may be reached at the church telephone, 388-2610, or email, [email protected].
There will be a dedication and open house at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, during the annual Harvest Day Celebration. Guest speakers will include representatives from the town of Sumner, Hannaford Brothers, Community Concepts and the Congregational Church of East Sumner.
All who have helped with construction of the addition, physically or financially, are invited to take part in the celebration. For more information, call Bill 388-2263 or Cyndy 388-2667
