STRONG — Franklin County Soil and Water Conservation District will host outdoor learning sessions on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at the Strong Town Office, Foster Memorial Building, 14 South Main St.
A session on “Invasive Plant Identification and Control” will be held at 8:30 a.m. to help participants identify common upland non-native invasive plants common to Maine’s forests and develop control strategies for non-native invasive plants.
Anyone with an interest in invasive plants is encouraged to attend.
Ann Gibbs, state horticulturist, will be the presenter for the identification issues and control of the invasive plants class. Patty Cormier, Maine Forest Service, will serve as facilitator and help with the field identification session.
Continuing education credits may be available.
A guided tree identification walk will take place at 12:30 p.m. Participants will have the opportunity to use the plant key in their free” Forest Trees of Maine.”
They will learn how to measure tree heights and diameters and guess the age of a tree using an increment borer, among other topics.
Patty Cormier, Maine Forest Service, and Consulting Forester Amanda Dow-Smith will teach tree identification and answer questions.
Bring appropriate field gear for weather conditions and wear appropriate foot gear.
