LISBON FALLS — Author Annette Vance Dorey will be the speaker when the Lisbon Historical Society meets Wednesday, Sept. 11, at the MTM Center, 18 School St. She will discuss “Maine Mothers Who Murdered 1875?1925: Doing Time in State Prison.”
Dorey will give an illustrated talk about her latest book. In it she reveals the previously untold stories of more than 30 mothers accused of murder. Scores of women and girls a century and longer ago were incarcerated in the Maine State Prison at Thomaston, several of them murderers.
Dorey will share stories about the extensive research and the most surprising discoveries.
Dorey studied the mothers’ marital status, family relationships and economic struggles. The mothers came from 12 of Maine’s 16 counties. They were sentenced to hard labor, ranging from one year to life in the state prison.
The book will be available for purchase and signing at the meeting. Refreshments will be served following the program. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the event will start at 7. Both parking and entrance are in the rear of the building.
The program is free and open to the public. For information, call Dorothy Smith at 353-8510 or [email protected].
