Air Force Airman Amanda K. Barnes has graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Barnes is the daughter of Jill Barnes of Troy and niece of Gail Breton of Lewiston. She is a 2011 graduate of Mount View High School, Thorndike.

Navy Midshipman Alexandra D. Lynch, daughter of Denise K. and Daniel G. Lynch of Topsham, recently completed ‘Plebe’ Summer at the U.S. Navy Academy.

Plebe Summer began on Induction Day, June 27, and concluded after seven weeks of basic midshipman training.

The pressure and rigor of Plebe Summer is designed to help “plebes” prepare for their first academic year at the Naval Academy and the four years of challenges leading to graduation and commissioning as a Navy or Marine Corps Officer. Plebe Summer is run by upper-class midshipmen who are specially trained in their leadership roles to develop plebes into midshipmen.

Air Force Cadet Kojiro Kobayashi has completed basic cadet training and earned the rank of cadet fourth class at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo.

The cadet completed the six-week orientation program. The training prepares cadets to enter their first academic year at the academy.

The cadets completed the training in two phases. Phase one consisted of military and physical preparation which focused on the transition from civilian to military life. Phase two involved three weeks of field training on the academy grounds to participate in activities to extend their physical limitations and build self and group confidence.

At graduation, the cadet receives a bachelor of science degree and a commission of second lieutenant in the Air Force.

Kobayashi is cadet fourth class assigned to the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo. He is the son of Betsy and Naoto Kobayashi of Manchester. Kobayashi graduated in 2012 from Maranacook Community High School, Readfield.
