NORWAY — The Alan Day Community Garden will offer a workshop during which participants will make their own garden gathering baskets on Saturday, Sept. 14. The workshop will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the garden, 26 Whitman St., across the street from the Grange.
Retired teacher Karen Ellis has been making baskets since she was a Girl Scout. Ellis will bring the supplies to each person to craft a functional basket.
The garden will supply a lunch of vegetable soup, salad, bread and desserts, much of it grown in the garden. Participants will go home with the baskets they made.
The cost of the workshop, including lunch and supplies, is a sliding scale of $45 to $75 depending on capacity. Preregistration is required by calling 890-9622 or emailing [email protected]. The class will be limited to 20 participants.
Looking ahead, on Saturday, Sept. 28, Scott Vlaun of Moose Pond Arts + Ecology in Otisfield, will offer a “Seed Saving” workshop from 3 to 5 p.m., followed by the annual Harvest Party from 5 to 7.
The party will feature a potluck meal, music and a campfire. Everyone is welcome; bring a potluck dish to share, musical instruments to play, and plates and silverware to celebrate the end of another gardening season.
Created in 2009 to honor the memory of local philanthropist and artist, Alan Day, the garden is a 501c3 organization that accepts tax-deductible donations. For more information, contact Garden Coordinator Rocky Crockett at [email protected] or 743-2423 and/or visit alandaygarden.wordpress.com.
