SOUTH PARIS — Roland C. Cyr, 85, of Lewiston, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 4, at the Maine Veterans’ Home, where he had been a resident since May 1.
He was born in Skowhegan, the son of Louise Mathon. They moved to Lewiston, where he attended Lewiston schools and enlisted in the Marine Corps as soon as he could. He was in infantry combat training when the war ended, but in 1952, he served as the recruitment officer for the Marines in Auburn. It was then and there he met the love of his life, Rita Brault. They were married on May 31, 1952.
He was a lifetime member in the Marine Corps League, the Military Order of Devil Dogs and American Legion Post 22. He believed, “once a Marine, always a Marine!”
Always living in Lewiston, his work ranged from the Rollodrome in New Auburn to North American Philips and the Bates Mill. He also built and operated the Four Seasons Campground in Naples, and later started the Mailroom on Center Street in Auburn. During these years, he was a part-time accountant and tax preparer.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rita Cyr, of Lewiston; his daughter, Suzanne Hyde and husband, Alan, and their children, Ashley and Aaron, of Southbury, Conn.; and sons, Paul Cyr and his wife, Ruth, of Washington, N.C., and Michael Cyr and his wife, Anna, of Leeds and their children, Mallory and Maisy.
A special thank you goes out to the nurses and the staff of the “B” unit at Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris. You not only care for the elderly and sick, but also for all the family and friends included. Without you ladies, this would have been a much tougher journey.
