1918 – 2013

SOUTH PARIS — Harrington “Harry” M. Newell, 94, of South Paris, died Friday, Sept. 6, at the Maine Veterans’ Home.

He was born in Sumner on Oct. 16, 1918, the son of Leslie E. and Hattie Robinson Newell. He graduated from Kennett High School in Conway, N.H.

He was a member of the Maine National Guard, until he was called up to the U.S. Army in 1941. He served in Florida, Mississippi, California and the South Pacific in the 103rd Infantry HQ 43 Division. Their motto was “To the last man,” and he was the last surviving member of the division. He had been the chairman and treasurer of the 103rd reunions.

Harry married Dorothy Beattie on Dec. 25, 1940. He had been chief truck mechanic for Sanborn Motor Express for many years. He loved his camp in Newry, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was a member of the Kora Shrine, where he drove the “Sanborn’s truck” for the chanters. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Tyrian Lodge 73 AF & AM in Mechanic Falls.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of South Paris; Roscoe Staples Jr., who was like a son to him; sister-in-law, Pauline Thorpe of Brunswick; nieces and nephews, Deborah Williams, Leslie E. Pulsifer and wife, Priscilla, Charles W. Newell of Bethel, Robert Newell and wife, Johan, of West Paris and Mary Timmins of Zanesville, Wis.; and several great-nieces and -nephews.

He was predeceased by siblings, Walter B., Arthur, Dorothy, Eva and Bernice.
