WILTON — A Chesterville woman was killed Tuesday afternoon when her Jeep and a loaded pulp truck collided at the intersection of Routes 2 and 4 and Route 156.
Claire Trask, 59, was driving north on Route 156 when she apparently drove into the intersection without stopping at the stop sign, Wilton police Chief Heidi Wilcox said.
Trask died at the scene, she said.
The 1986 Mack truck, coming east down a hill on Routes 2 and 4 with a load of hemlock logs, was owned and driven by Patrick Smith, 37, of Dixfield. He was not injured when the rig hit the SUV and rolled over, spilling the logs onto the road and damaging the traffic island.
Witnesses told police Trask entered the intersection at about 1:15 p.m. without stopping her SUV, Wilcox said.
The Jeep was demolished and the logging truck had substantial damage, she said.
The accident is under investigation by Sgt. Chad Abbott of the Wilton Police Department. Wilton police are asking that anyone who witness the accident call them at 645-3876.
Maine State Police commercial vehicle enforcement, accident reconstruction and forensic mapping specialists responded to assist with the investigation.
Wilton Fire Department was assisted by Farmington Fire and Rescue and East Dixfield Fire Department. NorthStar ambulance was at the scene and the town road crew helped clear the road.
Last week, the Wilton Board of Selectmen agreed to ask the Maine Department of Transportation to hold a preliminary public hearing on their plans to improve the intersection.
The hearing will allow residents to look at the plans and get updates on them. Construction is expected to begin in 2015, Town Manager Rhonda Irish told the board.
“It’s a major intersection,” she said about the site where several fatalities and accidents have occurred. “
Irish contacted DOT following the board meeting but has not heard a response from them, she said Tuesday after the latest accident. She expects the hearing to take place this year but doesn’t have a date, she said.
