1923 – 2013

LEWISTON — Mary L. Cummings, 90, of Lewiston, died Monday, Sept. 9, at Marshwood Health Care Center, following a long illness.

She was born in Drew Plantation on April 20, 1923, the daughter of Ernest and Cora (Butters) Leavitt. She had two sisters and one brother.

The family moved to Lewiston, where she attended Jordan Grammar School and Lewiston High School. After high school, she went to work at Marois Restaurant and during World War II, she worked at the shipyard. Prior to being married, Mary played guitar and sang on the “Al Ricker Radio Show” out of Lewiston.

After the war, Mary married Clarence “Stanley” Cummings and they moved to Connecticut. While in Connecticut, Mary was employed by Casco Products and later at Norden’s, making sonar equipment for submarines and NASA. After she and her husband retired, they moved back to Maine.

Mary loved music and enjoyed going to bluegrass festivals.

Mary never had children, but has many nieces and nephews and has always been kind, loving and supportive to all of them.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Ida Grant and Eva Libby; and by one brother, Ernest Leavitt.
