NORWAY — Timber Framing Workshops will be held at Roberts Farm Preserve on three weekends, Oct. 5 through Oct. 20, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Starting on Oct. 5, The Center for an Ecology-Based Economy in Norway, in conjunction with The Western Foothills Land Trust and Oxford Hills/Buckfield Adult Education, will host a series of three weekend workshops with the goal of completing a small timber frame structure by Oct. 20.
Participants may attend any or all of the three weekend classes or choose to complete a two-week intensive course for additional experience and guided hands-on instruction. This intensive course will include all three weekends as well as four weekdays each week. Enrollment in the two-week course in limited to four participants.
Combining classroom work and extensive hands on experience, workshop participants will gain knowledge about the history and evolution of timber framing and the fundamentals of timber frame design before moving on to learn how to use and care for basic timber framing tools, lay out and create mortise and tenon joinery, and the art of pre-fitting and raising a frame.
The frame will be built with timbers harvested from the preserve and milled on site.
These workshops will be led by Shawn Kane and Scott Vlaun of CEBE, who built the existing Robert’s Farm warming hut and equipment barn. All levels of experience are welcome. Basic knowledge of hand tools, sturdy work boots and safety glasses are required.
