Texting and driving is a serious public safety hazard, and we in the Legislature have passed laws to outlaw the practice. However, more is needed to change driving habits and behavior, and to prevent more people from being hurt or killed.

To their credit, cell phone companies have taken action to help bring that change. There is a movie online, “From One Second to the Next,” that focuses on the stories of the people whose lives have been forever changed by texting and driving.

I encourage people to take the pledge to not text and drive. Thursday, Sept. 19, is Drive 4 Pledges Day. We can all spread the word: It can wait.
