TURNER — Selectmen approved renewing two junkyard permits Tuesday night, tabled a third and suspended a fourth.

The decisions followed a public hearing on the applications for renewal and Code Enforcement Officer Roger Williams’ photos and verbal assessment of each property.

David Richardson’s junkyard at 140 Harlow Hill Road met the Turner Junkyard and Automobile Graveyard ordinance, and the board voted unanimously to renew his permit.

However, his junkyard at 1630B Auburn Road does not have a satisfactory natural screen to hide it from abutting property and the small berm does not meet the requirements of the ordinance. The board voted to table the application until its Oct. 7 meeting so he can get the buffer in compliance.

Lester Quimby’s junkyard at 38 Quimby Road met the ordinance and his permit was renewed.

Jesse Walker’s site at 448 County Road had several areas that needed improvement. The junkyard does not have a natural buffer from the public roadway, it does not sit more than 100 feet from a public roadway and the property is not out of view from abutters. After lengthy discussion, selectmen voted to suspend his permit until he fixes the problems.

Selectmen continued efforts to collect back taxes on properties to avoid selling them. Town Manager Scott LaFlamme was asked to again reach out to six property owners in an attempt to get them to pay up by Sept. 27. If they don’t, the properties will be advertised for sale.
