MECHANIC FALLS — Jane Vanston Nichols, 68, died on Wednesday, Sept. 18, at her residence in Mechanic Falls. Following a short illness, she died peacefully surrounded by the company of her closest friends.

She was born in Portland, the daughter of Horace S. Nichols and E. Edwina (Vanston) Nichols, then of Kennebunk. Early on she was seen to be a child requiring special needs, but during her life, she provided those around her with an example of her generous spirit, special courage and good humor.

She is survived by her devoted caregivers; numerous close associates; a brother, Edmund S. Nichols II of Scarborough; a sister, Sally N. Tracy of E. Falmouth, Mass.; and five nieces and nephews.
