NORWAY – People can tour a local landmark Saturday if they buy a bundle of roofing shingles for the Gingerbread House on Main Street.

On Sept. 28, Friends of the Gingerbread House will be at the 19th-century landmark to offer a tour of the nearby Ordway house on Pleasant Street in return for a $50 donation for the roofing project. The work is expected to be done by 2014.

The “Buy and Bundle” event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with tours of the Ordway house between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Joan Beal of Friends of the Gingerbread House said Albert Judd, owner of the Ordway house, will offer tours.

In a statement released by the Friends of the Gingerbread House, Beal said the Greek Revival home was a small, two-story house built in 1804 by John Ordway. In 1827, his brother, Peter Ordway, a house joiner from North Yarmouth, expanded it. After going through several owners, it was purchased by Albert Judd, a member of Friends of the Gingerbread House, who is restoring the house and grounds.

Participants in the tour will be able to see the formal rooms, the double entry stair hall, library and dinning room. Friends of the Gingerbread House say they hope participants will get a sense of what is possible for the Gingerbread House after touring the Ordway house.

Participants will also view framed architectural blueprints of all three floors of the Gingerbread House. The drawings were completed by Jonathan Cipolloso and the Oxford Hills Technical School CADD drawing class.

Friends of the Gingerbread House launched its “Buy a Bundle” campaign on May 25. To date, $5,500 has been raised toward the goal of $10,000. That includes a raffle donation of $320 by C & C Natural Meats.

Work will be done this fall to rebuild the chimneys, which were partly dismantled during the 2011 move from Advertiser Square to the current site farther west on Main Street and renovating the windows.

This is the final Saturday for the Buy a Bundle campaign in 2013.

Donations can also be made through the website www.gingerbreadhousenorway.org or PO Box 525, Norway ME 04268.
