1938 – 2013
LEWISTON — Cecil M. Danforth, 75, of Litchfield, passed away surrounded by his family on Monday, Sept. 23, at d’Youville Pavilion.
He was born in Monmouth on June 25, 1938. He attended Litchfield Academy, graduating in 1956. Following high school, Cecil enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and married his sweetheart, June F. Slattery, in April 1957. In 1968, after working in Leominster, Mass., Cecil brought his family back to Maine and worked for International Shoe Machine Company for many years. He held New Balance Shoe in high regard and liked to share stories about the start-up of the company; it wasn’t unlike him to check to see if you were wearing New Balance shoes.
Cecil loved sports, hunting, fishing and mowing his lawn. He was a lifetime member of the Litchfield Sportsmen Club and a member of Central Maine Board Approved Umpire Association for many years; he was a passionate coach for the Monmouth Little League.
In his Litchfield home, he proudly displayed his trophies of moose, deer, caribou and a catch from Lake Ontario. One of his biggest passions was going to baseball games, especially at Oak Hill High School, Maranacook High School and the University of Southern Maine. He was always quick with a good hunting story and loved his dog, Heidi.
He is survived by a daughter, Audrey, of Litchfield; three sons, Danny and his wife, Robin, of Sidney, Bret of Litchfield and Kent and his wife, Audrey, of Willis, Texas; his sisters, Madelyn, Valerie, Leona and Judy; a brother, Everett; nine grandchildren, Matthew, Patrick, Christina, Elizabeth, Zachary, Ashley, Michael, Adam and Taylor; and five great-grandchildren.
Cecil was predeceased by his wife, June, in 1994; a sister, Margaret; and a brother, Terry.
