War has been declared upon rubber sling shots and air rifles by the lighting department of the city of Lewiston. In the past two weeks boys equipped with these implements of destruction have broken about 25 street lights in the residential section of the city. Each light so broken represents an expenditure of $2 to the taxpayers and becomes a total loss. The department is now on the hunt for the lads who are doing the mischief and all caught will be taken into court and punished to the full extent of the law. The penalty for breaking one of the lights is $10 and costs of prosecution. Parents whose sons have either an air rifle or a sling shot will be using precautionary measures to have a chat with the lads.

EDITORIAL — The novel plan of the Cumberland Farms Northern Inc. issuing coupons for the difference between what it would like to sell milk for in Maine and what the Milk Commission requires it to charge, is being challenged by the Commission, as expected. The Commission contention is that the coupon system is “destructive of the scheduled minimum price of milk.” Everyone interested in milk prices, and that is just about everyone, will watch closely. It is another step in the showdown of retail milk price control in Maine.

Organizers say it’s a 10-K exercise in democracy, the kind that will raise both your pulse and your consciousness. It is PeaceWalk 88, a 10-kilometer walkathon for peace that will take place in 13 Maine communities on Oct. 16, including Lewiston-Auburn. PeaceWalk is aimed at bringing about a freeze on nuclear weapons and promoting U.S. non-interventionist policies in Central America and elsewhere. The event begins at Kennedy Park.
