1918 – 2013
AUBURN — Lucille Knowles (Rich) Smith, 95, of Pine Avenue in Livermore Falls, passed away peacefully Wednesday morning, Sept. 25, at the Androscoggin Hospice House.
Lucille was born in Jay on May 8, 1918, the daughter of Albert E. and Mildred (Parker) Rich. She was a graduate of Livermore Falls High School, Class of 1938. After graduation, she married Harold Earl Smith of Livermore Falls on Dec. 12, 1938. Their daughter, Gloria, born in Lewiston in 1939, passed away in 1941 from meningitis. Lucille was the 11th generation descendant of Richard Warren of the Mayflower.
Harold and Lucille lived in their Pine Avenue family home all of their married life. Harold transformed the house into what is now a modern New England home. When Harold was drafted into World War II, Lucille went to work at Bath Iron Works as a “Rosie the Riveter.” After the war ended, she worked for many years at Bass Shoe Co., in Wilton.
She spent many retirement years keeping the top of the hill looking immaculate; her yard and garden were something to be admired. Lucille was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Livermore Falls.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Marilyn (Foss) Rice, Roland Foss, David Foss, Sharon (Foss) Osborne, Gail Groomes, Lucille Groomes, Joseph Groomes, Mark Groomes, Stephen Groomes, David Rich, Timothy Rich, Michael Longstaff and Donna Smith; cousin, Dorothy Barker White; sister-in-law, Ida Smith Kretschmar; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. Lucille will be sadly missed by her nieces, nephews, cousin and many friends and acquaintances. Pine Avenue will miss her loving touch.
She was predeceased by her parents, Albert and Mildred; her husband, Harold; daughter, Gloria; siblings, Wilma Rich, Evelyn (Rich) Groomes, Ruth (Rich) Foss, Doris (Rich) Longstaff and Albert E. Rich Jr.; brother-in-law, Ralph Smith of Jay; and a niece, Sandra Elaine Rich.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Sandy River Nursing Home in Farmington, Helping Hands of Lewiston and Androscoggin Hospice House in Auburn for the loving care they gave to Lucille.
