BELFAST — Police said that one woman was transported to the hospital Saturday afternoon after being injured in a head-on crash on Route 52.
The accident happened when Robert New, 54, of Belfast, who was driving south at about noon, made a left hand turn into J&B Auto Body. He apparently did not see an oncoming vehicle, according to Officer Wendall Ward of the Belfast Police Department.
“He turned right in front of Kimberly Hanson of Northport,” Ward said later Saturday afternoon. He just didn’t see her at all.”
Hanson, 47, suffered injuries that were considered not life-threatening, Ward said. She was taken by Belfast Ambulance to Waldo County General Hospital. Her passenger, 76-year-old Stuart Parsons, a summer resident of the Belfast area, was uninjured.
New, who also was not injured, was driving a Toyota pickup truck, which appeared to be totaled, Ward said. Hanson’s Honda Pilot SUV “probably” is totaled, too. Both vehicles sustained a lot of front-end damage, Ward said.
Maine State Police assisted Belfast officers at the scene, and the Belfast Fire Department helped with traffic control and cleanup, Ward said. Traffic was diverted for about 20 minutes, he said, adding that no charges will be filed.
“There was nothing done intentionally,” Ward said. “He failed to yield the right of way, but he simply did not see her.”
