AUGUSTA (AP) — Ground has been broken on a memorial in Augusta to the state’s murdered children.

Gov. Paul LePage was among those who took part in the ceremony Sunday at Holy Family Cemetery.

Arthur Jette heads the Maine chapter of Parents of Murdered Children. He said he hopes the memorial serves as a place for grieving families to find solace and a spot for anyone to think about what they can do to prevent violence. Jette’s grandson, 21-month-old Treven Cunningham, was murdered in 1999.

The memorial will have the names of 400 to 500 Maine murder victims inscribed on black granite tablets. A red granite centerpiece will feature the organization’s symbol, a red ribbon.

The memorial is expected to be complete next spring. Organizers say they need to raise another $5,000.
