CORINTH — An Exeter man was killed Sunday morning when he was struck by a pickup truck while riding his bike on Route 43, police said.

Joseph Sweet, 27, was riding a three-wheel bicycle when he was hit by a truck driven by Christopher Nichols, 28, of Corinth, Chief Deputy Troy Morton of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office said.

Nichols was heading eastbound on Route 43 in his Ford F-150 around 10:40 a.m. when the accident occurred, according to Morton. Sweet’s 15-year-old brother was riding his own bicycle ahead of the victim and was not hit.

Morton said Nichols looked down and took his eyes off the roadway shortly before hitting Sweet. Sweet was pronounced dead at the scene.

The case has been forwarded to the Penobscot County district attorney’s office for review and to determine whether Nichols will be charged.
