SOUTH PARIS — Malcolm Percy Smith, 83, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Maine Veterans Home.
He was born in Harrison on Jan 9, 1930, to Arthur and Gladys Smith, and brother to Muriel. Moving to Norway at age 12, he attended Norway schools, graduating from Norway High School in 1949. He joined the U.S. Navy immediately following high school and spent his time following his passion for the trumpet in the Navy Band, stationed in Hawaii.
He met and married Marion Juliette Pike and raised their five children in Norway. After the death of his wife in 1976, he married Frances Thurston Butters in 1977. They enjoyed many years together, wintering in Florida, taking long rides on their Gold Wing and spending time with friends at many a dance.
Malcolm continued playing his horns throughout his life, whether teaching a young student, playing for the local community plays or playing with many swing bands in both Maine and Florida.
After working for Oxford Provisions/Oxford Foods for several years, he worked for more than 25 years as a carrier and clerk for the Norway Post Office, until his retirement.
He is survived by his loving wife, Frances; children, Lynn (Jim) Hamper, Oxford, Stephen (Carole) Smith, Norway, Jennifer Smith, South Paris, Melody Griffin (Gary), Newport, N.H., and Jeffrey (Karen) Smith, Lewiston; stepdaughter, Bonita Seams (Rick), South Paris; stepsons, John (Marcia) Butters, Waterford, and Randy (Maureen) Butters, Stoneham; grandchildren, Jennifer and Uric Hamper, Meagan Baker, Courtney Lorrain, Hallee Wright, Krystle Gunter and Joshua Smith; and great-grandchildren, Ethan, Allison, Abigail, Kylie and Keira.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the Maine Veterans Home staff for their wonderful comfort and care.
