FARMINGTON — The Farmington Recreation Department is starting pickleball for adults on the new courts at the Farmington Community Center beginning Tuesday, Oct. 8.

Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis.

Each Tuesday and Thursday evening, players may select 90-minute blocks to compete against others of similar attitude and ability.

The first time slot from 6 to 7:30 p.m. is geared toward beginners and those who are content to mix and match with recreational/social players.

People who prefer this time may choose to play pickleball or badminton as their racket sport. This offering, for middle-aged adults and older, can accommodate up to 12 people playing doubles and will be referred to as Baby Boomers’ Night Out.

Following the Baby Boomers will be pickleball for those who are more competitive. It will cater to players of any age. Depending on the turnout, doubles or singles matches can be played. If volunteers can be found to secure the building, the possibility exists that this grouping can stay beyond the end time of 9 p.m.

The Farmington Recreation Department is determined to provide a chance to allow people of all abilities and ages to find time to try this popular sport at the Community Center. Recreation Department personnel will review and evaluate court management after a few weeks to see if it is working for players.

Pickleball has proven a satisfactory activity for tennis players during cold weather.

The Recreation Department has a variety of equipment, pickleball paddles and balls, for players to use.

The fee is $2 per person for each hour and a half of court time.

For more information, call the Recreation Department office at 778-3464 or stop by the Farmington Community Center, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
