1948 – 2013

BANGOR — Lawrence “Larry” George Holmquist, 65, of Monson, passed away Thursday, Sept. 26, at the hospital.

He was born April 28, 1948, in Dover-Foxcroft, the son of Arvid L. and Ethel J. (Johnson) Holmquist. Larry graduated from Monson Academy, Class of 1966, where he was involved in baseball, basketball, skiing and track. He was a delegate to Boys State and was a National Merit Scholarship recipient. He attended Aroostook State College for a year and transferred to the University of Maine, Farmington, graduating in 1970 with a degree in education. He participated in baseball his freshman and junior years, and was a member of Phi Sigma Pi fraternity.

Larry taught in the Auburn School District from 1970 to 2000 and then worked as an ed tech at Piscataquis Community High School from 2000 to 2013. He was the athletic director at PCHS from 2000 to 2008.

Larry was a high school basketball referee and a member of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials (IAABO) from 1974 to 1991, where he served on the executive committee and was a past president. He was also a softball umpire; he umpired at four national softball tournaments, nine state high school championship federation games, and numerous district and regional games. He was also a member of the Andy Valley Umpire’s Association, where he served as District UIC (Umpire in Chief).

He is survived by his longtime best friend, Susan C. Grondin of Lewiston; Scott Grondin of Lewiston; and cousin, Dorcas Leavitt of Guilford. He will be remembered by friend, Elizabeth Hinkel of Auburn; friend and mentor, Norm Davis of Auburn; special friend, Jill Shelley and her daughter, Keeley, of Jackman; Logan Sargeant, a former student of Guilford; the staff of PCHS; and the staff at Auburn Middle School.
