A collection of watercolors by Irene Rothe of Auburn and photography by Debbie Angelides, manager of the Woman’s Hospital Association Gift Shop at CMMC, are on display in the 60 High Street lobby through Nov. 7.

Angelides began her photographic work while she managed her own gift shop in Jay for more than a decade.

“It’s amazing the beauty that is out there. Watching turtles sunning in spring,” she said. “I also enjoy feeding birds and watching them feed their young. Some of my best pictures are of birds and wildlife.”

Rothe began painting in 1973 with instructor Phyllis Woodsum of Wayne and in 1992 started showing her work at sidewalk shows. She enjoys painting island scenes, especially Monhegan Island. Her primary medium is watercolor.

“I studied with other artists but the greatest impetus in the development of my own style came from absorbing the brilliant work of Charles Reid,” Rothe said. “Beyond the influence of these people, is the profound beauty of the beautiful state of Maine. I grew up in the Midwest where there are no mountains, coasts, islands, and hundreds and hundreds of ponds, lakes and marshes. Since moving to Maine I have been blessed with the opportunity to pursue my heart’s desire and feast on the abundance of landscapes which inspire it.”
