NEWRY — The Mahoosuc Guide Service, with the help of the Mahoosuc Land Trust and the Western Mountain Senior College, will host a reading by Maine author Alice Arlen at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, at the Mahoosuc Mountain Lodge.

Polly Mahoney, co-owner of the Mahoosuc Guide Service, said it normally doesn’t host readings but her personal connection with Arlen, who splits her time between living in Bryant Pond and Portland, convinced her to organize the Oct. 11 reading.

“I’ve known Alice for awhile,” she said. “One of her books is being re-released, so I figured it would be a good time to invite her for a reading. Plus, I think her book will be of interest to the people in this area.”

Arlen has written eight books, including “She Took to the Woods,” published in 2001. The book is a biography of author Louise Dickinson Rich.

Rich split her time between Maine and Massachusetts and published several nonfiction and fiction books about the New England region.

Arlen said in a news release, “Writing nonfiction has been a source of inspiration and connection for me. I’m so pleased that ‘She Took to the Woods’ has been released again and am looking forward to sharing some of the writing process and background behind that book, as well as my others.”

The reading is free to the public, though donations will be accepted.

Mahoney said she has turned to the Mahoosuc Land Trust and the Western Maine Senior College to help her advertise for the reading.

“They’ve helped me quite a bit, as far as using their Facebook page to advertise and using their contacts to get the word out there,” she said. “They’re also going to help out with refreshments. It’s been a collaborative effort.”
