OXFORD — A three-way race for an open seat on the Board of Selectmen is underway in Oxford.
Nomination papers filed by Peter Laverdiere, Peter Cushman and William Sanborn have been approved and the three candidates will be on the November ballot, according to Town Clerk Ellen Morrison.
The candidates are running to fill a seat held by Dennis Sanborn, who passed away in May.
Sanborn, who was re-elected in 2012, had two years remaining on his term.
The winner of the election will finish that term.
Selectmen decided not to hold a special election, saying it would be more practical to hold the election in November to coincide with the statewide ballot.
This is Oxford’s first contested race for selectman in two years.
In June 2012, Sanborn, along with longtime Board of Selectmen Chairman Floyd Thayer, ran uncontested. This past June, board members Jay Goforth and Scott Owens also won with no opposition.
The election will be held Nov. 5 and is the only town issue facing voters, Morrison said.
