A year ago, only one team in Maine, Mt. Blue, made it all the way through the season without a loss.

Five weeks into the 2012 campaign, remarkably almost one out of seven programs in the state — 11 of 76 — still boast a zero in the loss column.

That excellence is a shared proposition in Eastern Class D, where Bucksport, Mattanawcook of Lincoln and Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield all sit with spotless 5-0 marks.

Don’t expect the logjam to last. After facing John Bapst this week, Bucksport travels to MCI on Oct. 18 before finishing the regular season Oct. 25 at home with Mattanawcook.

Thanks to a scheduling quirk in the 10-team league, MCI and Mattanawcook won’t meet any earlier than the playoffs.

Eastern Class C finds Winslow and Waterville sharing the high-rent district at 5-0, and anyone who has paid attention to high school football in the past century knows how that one at least tentatively will be settled. The age-old rivals collide at Waterville’s Drummond Field on Saturday, Oct. 26.

Winslow has one more speed bump when it hosts Foxcroft on Oct. 19. Waterville outlasted Foxcroft, 20-19, on the road a week ago.

Every other division in the state has a single undefeated team at the top.

Winthrop/Monmouth leads Western D with the toughest part of the schedule behind them. The Ramblers finish with Sacopee Valley, Boothbay and Maranacook.

In order to earn 8-0 and a top seed in Western C, Leavitt will have to get by Mountain Valley this week before a tricky double-whammy of Wells (4-1) and Spruce Mountain (4-1).

Brunswick (5-0) and Kennebunk (5-0) are on a collision course for a Class B crossover clash in Week 8. The Rams haven’t gone unbeaten since an 11-0 mark in 1991, while the East-leading Dragons are in the 50th anniversary of their most recent perfect season.

Cheverus (Eastern A) and Bonny Eagle (Western A) won’t play a somebody’s-0-must-go game during the regular season. The Scots’ toughest test is at Thornton next week, while the Stags tackle the Trojans on Saturday before traveling to Bangor next weekend.
