RUMFORD — The Women of Steel Committee of USW Local 900 held a gate collection at the Rumford Paper Mill at shift change in late July and collected $2090. This was a generous response by the 800 hourly and salary employees at the mill.
On Aug. 16 WOS chairwoman Linda Deane, accompanied by Judilee Whittmore, Kelly Martin and IBEW member Meg Smith (photographer), traveled to Lac Megantic and presented the collection to Mayor Collette Roy-Laroche. The visitors learned that Laroche has become a sort of rock star because of the heroic way she dealt with the disaster and all the public appearances she is now making.
The Maine women were overwhelmed by the enormity of the devastation to the small town.
