KITTERY — Quarterback Jared Vermette rushed in from the 1-yard line, scoring the game-winning touchdown and giving Telstar a narrow 7-0 victory over Traip Academy in a football game Saturday.

It was the Rebels’ first home varsity win.

Telstar marched down to the 1-yard line after the opening kickoff in the third quarter against Traip Academy. That’s when Vermette carried the ball across the goal line with the winning TD. Mohammed Al-Zubaidi split the uprights for the extra point, and the Rebels held on the rest of the way.

Girls’ soccer

Bangor 6, Lewiston 2

BANGOR — Bangor utilized six different scorers as the Rams cruised past Lewiston 6-2 in girls’ varsity soccer action Saturday.

Emily Smith, Eve George, Katerina Dagher, Keely Markevich, Amy Fahey and Molly Jack all tallied goals for the Rams (10-1). Sam Cote registered the only two goals for the Blue Devils (0-9-1), while Kelsey St. Cyr made eight saves in net.

Hall-Dale 2, Monmouth 2

MONMOUTH — With nine seconds left in the second half of regulation, Emily Maynard fired a goal into the back of the net off a free kick for Hall-Dale as the Bulldogs tied Monmouth 2-2 in MVC girls’ soccer action.

Maura Stottler was the first to break even, scoring nine minutes into the first half off a penalty kick for the Bulldogs (8-1-2). Kylie Kemp and Shannon Buzzell tallied a goal each for the Mustangs (6-4-1).

Fullback Buzzell worked well with teammates Ashley Coulombe and Sidney Wilson, who played shut down defense throughout the game.

Buckfield 5, GPC 0

PORTLAND —  Naudia Wesley scored three goals and picked up an assist, and teammates Bri Damon and Gabby Thierrault each scored a goal as Buckfield dismissed Greater Portland Christian with a 5-0 victory in a girls’ soccer game Saturday.

The Bucks (8-4-1) led 2-0 after the first half. Alexis Bennett and Amanda Paradis each earned assists. Goalie Arrabine Dunn made six saves to preserve her shutout.

Mens’ soccer

Bowdoin 2, Hamilton 0

BRUNSWICK — Matt Dias Costa and Zach Danssaert registered two goals on the day for Bowdoin as they edged Hamilton 2-0 in NESCAC men’s soccer action Saturday.

Amherst 3, Colby 1

WATERVILLE, Maine — Christopher Martin tallied a pair of goals, as third-ranked Amherst College earned a 3-1 win over Colby College in NESCAC men’s soccer Saturday.

Colby got on the scoreboard with just 7:58 to play in the game when Tim Stanton converted a penalty kick for the Mules (4-6).

Husson 3, New England College 1

BANGOR — The two squads played through an almost scoreless first half before Husson’s Stephen Berenyi broke the 0-0 tie. Berenyi scored the goal on a header try from the front of the net. Joshua Bean registered the assist on the goal for Husson.

The 54th minute of play saw the Eagles extending their lead to 2-0 off the head of Jimmy Fitzpatrick who placed a perfectly headed ball into the right side of the net. Husson improves to 5-0-2 in North Atlantic Conference play

Eastern Connecticut 4, USM 1

GORHAM — Mitch Power tallied two goals on the day to lift Eastern Connecticut past USM 4-1 in men’s soccer.

Carl Stensland and Nicholas Warren registered a goal each for Eastern Connecticut (8-1-3), while Caleb Leino scored the lone goal for the Huskies (0-13-1).

Bates 5, UMF 1

LEWISTON — Sophomore Luis Pereira scored three goals to lead the Bates College men’s soccer team to its second straight win, a 5-1 non-conference decision over UMaine-Farmington on Saturday afternoon at Russell Street Field.

The Bobcats (3-5-2) also received goals by senior tri-captain Tyler Grees and first-year Matt DiVite, as well as a pair of assists each by first-year Peabo Knoth and sophomore Sam Predham, in their highest scoring output of the season.
 
The Beavers (2-8-1) tied the game early on with a goal by sophomore Ryan Fairbanks (Lisbon Falls).

Womens’ Soccer

Eastern Connecticut 1, USM 0

MANSFIELD, Conn. — Sophomore Brianna Curcio’s first goal of the season midway through the first half proved to be enough for Eastern Connecticut to remain undefeated at home this year following a 1-0 victory over USM Saturday afternoon.

Katie Cobb (Lewiston) occupied the net for the Huskies (4-8-1).

Bowdoin 3, Hamilton 1

BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin women’s soccer team scored three second half goals in a come-back 3-1 win over visiting Hamilton this afternoon in Brunswick.

Bowdoin’s goalie Bridget McCarthy was forced to make several big saves to preserve the 0-0 tie with six opening half stops. Abby Hammerl, Kiersten Turner and Amanda Kinneston all registered a goal for the Polar Bears (8-1-1).

New England College 3, Husson 1

BANGOR — Emily Gubbins, Lauren Smith and Jillian Zanine all found the back of the net for New England College as they topped Husson 3-1 in womens’ soccer action Saturday.

Lona Sargent tallied her first goal of the season for the Eagles (5-8-1).

Amherst 3, Colby 1

WATERVILLE — Maggie Belnap netted two goals, including a key final goal for Amherst College, in a 3-1 victory over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference women’s soccer Saturday.
 
Annie Papadellis scored her fourth goal of the season for the Mules (4-5).

Women’s field hockey

Bowdoin 9, Hamilton 1

BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin field hockey team kicked off Homecoming Weekend with a 9-1 victory over visiting Hamilton this afternoon.

Rachel Kennedy, Liz Znamierowski, and Emily Simonton each tallied two goals for the Polar Bears in Saturday’s matchup, with Kennedy starting the team off at 24:07.

UMF 1, New England College 0

HENNIKER, N.H. – University of Maine at Farmington senior forward Kashley Weymouth would net the lone goal of the game lifting the visiting Beavers past the New England College Pilgrims 1-0 in field hockey action Saturday afternoon

The two teams would battle through the majority of the first half scoreless before Farmington’s Kashley Weymouth would break the drought one-timing in a centering pass from Andrea Beaulieu with just under five minutes remaining in the half.

St. Joe’s 2, Thomas 0

STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph’s College (9-2) shut down Thomas College (5-6), 2-0, in a North Atlantic Conference field hockey match at Mercy Field on Saturday afternoon. Junior forward Effie Drew (Portland, Maine) led the SJC offense with a goal and an assist in the victory.

Kelsey Dumond (Lewiston, Maine) connected with Drew on her lone goal of the day for the Monks.

Amherst 1, Colby 0

WATERVILLE  — The Colby College field hockey team finally gave up a goal at Bill Alfond Field and the lone score by 10th-ranked Amherst College stood up in a 1-0 New England Small College Athletic Conference win Saturday.

The Mules (5-4) had posted shutouts in the first four games at home this year and went 410 minutes, 16 seconds before allowing a goal by Sara Culhane. Sarah Evans kept Colby in the game with eight of her 12 saves in the opening half. She started the week leading the NESCAC in goals against average and save percentage.

Umass Dartmouth 2, USM 1

GORHAM — Senior Eleanor Taylor scored her 66th career goal for her 150th career point to snap a 1-1 stalemate and lead the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs to a 2-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in LEC field hockey action.

The Huskies led early in the contest after junior Peyton Dostie (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) recorded her team-leading 15th goal of the season on a blast from the top of the circle. Freshman goalkeeper Amanda Kasbohm (York, Maine) turned back nine shots in the loss for the Huskies (5-10).

Amherst 14, Colby 10

WATERVILLE — Amherst College rallied in the fourth quarter to score 14 unanswered points, to escape from Maine with a 14-10 victory over Colby College in NESCAC football. Amherst stays unbeaten on the season at 4-0, while the Mules fall to 1-3.

Bowdoin 27, Hamilton 21

BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College football team picked up its second-straight win in a 27-21 Homecoming victory over Hamilton Saturday at Whittier Field.

Bowdoin (2-2) scored on a pair of big plays early and held off a second-half rally by Hamilton to earn consecutive wins for the first time since 2011.
