AUGUSTA — As part of the UMA Jazz and Contemporary Music Program Artists Concert Series, acclaimed New York-based pianist/composer Frank Carlberg will present his quintet for a free concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, in Jewett Hall Auditorium. No tickets or reservations are required.

The concert will premiere Carlberg’s “Word Circus,” a jazz song-cycle commissioned by Chamber Music America. “Word Circus” features Carlberg’s musical settings of contemporary poetry by Jim Gustafson, Ron Padgett, Ken Mikolowski, Anselm Berrigan, Anselm Hollo and Joe Elliot.

Irreverent and innovative, The Frank Carlberg Quintet has been a powerful force on the international jazz scene for over 10 years. The group includes vocalist Christine Correa, saxophonist John O’Gallagher, bassist John Hebert, and drummer Michael Sarin. Their recent recording “The American Dream” received wide critical acclaim and features settings to poetry by Robert Creely.
