Haiku poetry contest for kids

FARMINGTON — The Arts Institute of Western Maine is sponsoring a haiku poetry contest for children in RSD 9, (including home-schooled children), grades K-6, as part of a kick-off event for Chester Greenwood Day. The theme/title for the poem should simply be “Earmuffs.”

The top 12 entrees will be awarded an L.L. Bean earmuff ($25 value) and an opportunity to read their poems at a festive family folk concert on Friday, Dec. 6, by the Burke/Surrette/Allyn Trio at the Emery Arts Center. Esteemed poets Wes McNair and Henry Braun will be the judges.

For the purposes of this contest, the traditional haiku format is defined by Webster as “an unrhymed verse form of Japanese origin having three lines containing usually five, seven and five syllables respectively.”

Entries should include the poet’s name, age, grade and contact information and mailed to AIWM, PO Box 325, Farmington, no later than Nov. 8.
