AUGUSTA — A man who lived as hermit in the Maine woods for 27 years before his arrest in April could get out of jail this month after a hearing admitting him to a special court program.
The Kennebec Journal reported that Christopher Knight is scheduled to be admitted to the Co-Occurring Disorders Court on Oct. 28 if he pleads guilty as expected to multiple burglary and theft charges. His attorney said Thursday that details are being finalized.
The program allows him to live in the community, work, and undergo counseling and treatment.
The 47-year-old Knight — known as the North Pond Hermit — was arrested after police say they caught him stealing food from a camp in Rome. Authorities said+ he is responsible for as many as 1,000 burglaries over the years.
