NORTHEAST CARRY TOWNSHIP (AP) — Maine State Police said a man and woman escaped serious injury when their single-engine plane crashed into Moosehead Lake while attempting a water landing.

Police said 31-year-old Thomas Coleman of West Forks was piloting a pontoon-equipped Cessna 185 when it crashed into the lake and sank at about 7 p.m. Saturday. Coleman had minor injuries and did not require hospitalization.

His passenger, 24-year-old Ashli Goodenow, of Portland, was flown by medical helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with what turned out to be a minor head injury.

Coleman told investigators he was flying from Jackman to Northeast Carry, a remote township at the northern end of the lake.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
