SOUTH PORTLAND — Maine home sales in September increased nearly 25 percent over the same month last year, the third straight month of double-digit increases for the state’s real estate market.

In September, Maine Realtors sold 1,307 single-family existing homes, a 24.59 percent increase over the number of homes sold in September 2012, according to data released Monday by the Maine Association of Realtors.

Statewide, the median sales price of those homes showed a slight bump of 1.76 percent, from $170,000 to $173,000, the data revealed.

This summer was a good season for Maine real estate. When looking at the number of homes sold in the three-month period between July and September, every Maine county saw a double-digit increase over the same period last year. Franklin County led the pack with a 53.5 percent increase in home sales, representing an increase from 71 to 109 sales, while Piscataquis posted a 10 percent increase, representing an increase from 60 to 66 sales, during that three-month period.

Bart Stevens, president of the Realtors association, doesn’t expect the selling activity to wind down.

“The extraordinarily busy summer season is beginning to wind down, and we now enter what many consider the second busiest selling time of the year — fall,” Stevens said in a statement.

Nationally, home sales in September increased 10.9 percent over the same month last year, while the national median sales price increased 11.4 percent to $199,300, according to the National Association of Realtors.
