FAIRFIELD (AP) — A man on the state’s sex offender registry has been charged with having prohibited contact with a minor after parents told police he was seen with children at a Fairfield athletic field.

Police said 49-year-old Timothy Hayes of Prentiss Plantation was seen with boys ages 6 and 8 on his lap.

The Morning Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1eFRMnb ) reported that Clinton police arrested Hayes on Saturday.

Parents initially contacted Clinton police Chief Craig Johnson.

Johnson contacted Fairfield police and the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department because Hayes lives in the county.

Hayes was placed on the Maine Sex Offender Registry in 2011 after he was convicted of unlawful sexual contact. He is prohibited from having contact with children under 14.

Hayes is being held in jail. It’s not clear if he has a lawyer.
