HEBRON — The Hebron Historical Society, once close to dissolving not too long ago, found new interest and membership in 2006.

The society struggled to find a suitable building until 2010, when they were presented the opportunity to purchase the home of a late society member, located across from the Hebron Town Hall. A plan was quickly developed to purchase the home and begin the extensive interior and exterior renovations, but that would require a great deal of fund-raising and volunteer efforts.

In October 2012, Norway Savings Bank stepped up to the plate and challenged the Hebron Historical Society to a two-for-one matching grant, stating that they would match their fund-raising efforts through the end of 2013, with a maximum of $10,000.

The Historical Society met the $10,000 match in August 2013 and on Sept. 24, Norway Savings Bank’s president, Patricia Weigel, presented the Historical Society with a $10,000 check at their building on Paris Road.

Bruce Conant, society president, thanks the membership for its hard work and dedication since committing to the home purchase in 2010.

The Historical Society has raised more than $48,000 toward their three-year goal of $50,000. This was done through a variety of events, including public suppers, yard sales and bake sales. The fundraising efforts of the organization allowed it to remodel the exterior and the first floor, purchase some needed equipment and accumulate funds. This Norway Savings donation brings the society close enough to their goal to pay off their mortgage.

“We’re thrilled at how quickly the Hebron Historical Society was able to raise the funds for this challenge,” said Weigel. “It’s evident that the community truly values the organization and we’re happy to be able to support the Historical Society and the Hebron community.”
