BRUNSWICK — An educator working in Mumbai, India, was hired Saturday to be the new principal at Brunswick High School.

The Brunswick school board hired Maine native Shanna Crofton on Saturday at a morning meeting. She was the nominated by Brunswick School Superintendent Paul Perzanoski.

Crofton will become principal on July 1, 2014, Perzanoski said.

“I’m delighted,” said Frank Strasburger, a citizen member of a search committee for a new principal.

According to a Times Record report, Crofton, a 2001 graduate of Bowdoin College, joined the committee Saturday morning via Skype from Mumbai for a 45-minute final interview before the vote.

Crofton is head of secondary school at the Oberoi International School. According to her message on the school’s Web page, she describes the grade 6-12 school as “student-centered.”

The school’s goal is to provide “a rigorous academic program that includes experiential opportunities, a pastoral program that teaches life skills and supports social development,” as well as physical well-being.

Bowdoin College spokesman Scott Hood said the college is proud of their graduates “like Shanna Crofton, who serve the common good as educators around the world. We are delighted to learn Shanna is returning to Brunswick. Brunswick High School offers a terrific education and valuable opportunities for young people, including the daughters and sons of many Bowdoin faculty and staff.”

Perzanoski said an interim candidate will be brought to the board on Nov. 13 to finish the school year, because Acting Principal Donna Borowick is retiring on Dec. 31.

The search for a new principal began in August, three months after former Principal Art Abelmann resigned abruptly before his two-year contract expired.

An online community survey asking residents what they wanted in a new principal was published in August. After receiving 15 applications, five candidates were interviewed before Crofton was hired.
