“Doubt”: A parable

MONMOUTH — The Monmouth Community Players have announced auditions for their upcoming production of John Patrick Shanley’s “Doubt,” directed by Artistic Director Adam P. Blais.

“Doubt” is a powerful drama that explores suspicion and moral uncertainty. In 1964, Sister Aloysius, a Bronx Catholic School Principal, takes matter into her own hands when she suspects that the younger Father Flynn has taken a personal interest in one of the younger students. Will the truth be revealed, and in the end, who will be left with doubt?

Auditions will consists of cold readings from the script, and will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, and Monday, Nov. 11, in Cumston Hall, 796 Main Street.

Performance dates are Jan. 24-Feb. 3, 2014. A tentative rehearsal schedule will be available at auditions. Anyone interested in auditioning for the production is asked to bring a calendar of possible scheduling conflicts to the auditions.

The character breakdown is as follows:

Sister Aloysius Beauvier: (50-65) The head nun and principle of St. Nicholas School. She is watchful, reserved, and unsentimental. She is a no-nonsense, hardened administrator and a traditionalist.

Sister James: (20-30) The enthusiastic yet inexperienced eighth grade teacher at St. Nicholas School. She is reserved, and wants to think the best of everyone.

Father Flynn: (35-45) A new priest at St. Nicholas School. He is extremely popular with his students, and somewhat liberal and modern in his religious views.

Mrs. Muller: (30-30) The African-American mother of one of the students at St. Nicholas. A member of the working class she is weary, and cautious of the world.
