BETHEL — Project Opportunity, which offers scholarships to Telstar High School students in the Bethel area, has been named recipient of the 2013 Maine School Boards Association Business Friend of Education Award.

The award was given to Project Opportunity Executive Director Ted Davis on Oct. 25 at the Maine School Management Association annual fall conference.

Scholarships are based on academic efforts and participation in school activities. Students also may apply for funding to help defray the cost of any nonathletic summer experience and receive grants for participation in leadership training and cultural activities.

Over the years, Project Opportunity has provided $400,000 in scholarships and $100,000 in grants to hundreds of students in SAD 44.

Recently the program was expanded to allow qualified members of Telstar’s senior class to participate in dual enrollment, full time, in Central Maine Community College. Project Opportunity offered to provide up to $25,000 to cover the full cost of tuition and fees for all participants. This fall, four seniors were the first to enroll in the program.

Project Opportunity was nominated for the award by the SAD 44 school board.
