Dentists to hold candy buyback

AUBURN — Center Street Dental will hold a Halloween Candy Buyback on Friday, Nov. 1, at 26 Cross St.

Staff will weigh in candy between 3 and 6 p.m. Children and visitors are welcome to wear their costumes. Children will be paid $1 for every pound of candy that they bring. In addition, for every pound of candy, they will donate 50 cents to the child’s school.

All children and visitors bringing candy during event will receive a free dental health goodie bag as well.

Center Street Dental will donate all of the candy to the troops through Operation Gratitude.

Retired educators to hear speaker

LEWISTON — The November meeting of the Androscoggin Retired Educators will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, at the Green Ladle Restaurant at Lewiston High School. Members should note the time change.

Jennifer Rooks, who hosts a talk show on MPBN, will be guest speaker. The business meeting will be held following Rooks’ presentation. Lunch will be served at 11:30 and will be Chef’s Choice. The cost of the meal is $11.

Members will continue to collect nonperishable food items and/or money donations for a local food pantry. All retired educators and their spouse are welcome.

Talk on reliquaries from Croatia

LEWISTON —  Ana Munk, a specialist in medieval art from southern and central Europe, will describe reliquaries from Croatia at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, in the Olin Concert Hall, Bates College, 75 Russell St.

Sponsored by the art and visual culture department and by the Learning Associates program at Bates, the lecture is open to the public at no cost. For more information, call 786-8212.

Munk’s lecture is titled “Treasures of Croatia: Reliquaries as Depositories of Cultural Memory.” An assistant professor since 2008 at the University of Zagreb, in Croatia, Munk teaches art history specializing in the medieval period and regions around the Adriatic Sea. She previously taught at the University of Saint Thomas in Houston, Texas.

‘Pause for Pets’ will benefit shelter

LEWISTON — “Pause for Pets,” a craft and vendor fair to be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, will benefit the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society.

It is being hosted by sisters, Lauren Odiorne and Shannon Vishe, both of Lewiston, at the Ramada Inn. Vendor fees are used to pay for the space and any remaining funds go to GAHS as do all raffles proceeds. The last event, on April 7, raised $600. A volunteer from GAHS will be on hand to give information about the shelter and accept donations.

Golden Age Club to attend Mass

AUBURN —  The Golden Age Club will meet Tuesday, Nov 12, for a memorial Mass for deceased members at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church.

Class, support group at The Ark

LEWISTON — The Ark, 791 Lisbon St., from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, will hold a program on “Check Your Brakes.” Discussion will be held on the nutritional and natural remedies for ADD and ADHD.

Bridge club announces winners

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Bridge Club winners at the Lewiston Armory on Oct. 28 were as follows: first, Jeanine Kivus and David Lock; second, Sue Kaluzynski and Rosemarie Goodwin; third, Nancy Farmer and Roger Labbe; first in B, Cindy Kirchherr and Jim Krainin.

Winners on Oct. 29 were: first, Patricia Garcia and David Lock; second, Paul Sherman and Mike True; third, Kathy Burden and Mary Trafton; fourth, Richard Balian and Roger Labbe.

Games are played every Monday and Tuesday in the Seniors’ Room at the Lewiston Armory, 65 Central Ave. A partner is guaranteed and all bridge players are welcome. Call Rosemarie at 754-1431 for more information.

Golf tournament successful

AUBURN — The Auburn-Lewiston YMCA hosted the fourth annual Charity Y/NAPA Charity Golf Tournament at Martindale Country Club on Sept. 19. The golf scramble was the organization’s most successful tournament so far.

Altogether the event raised $24,879 to be used for scholarship programs for children and youth who need financial assistance.
