LEWISTON — Rabbi Hillel Katzir will speak on his recently published book, “The Evolving Covenant: Jewish History and Why It Matters,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, in Callahan Hall at the Lewiston Public Library. Following the free, public presentation, copies of the book will be available for sale and the author will conduct a book signing.

Katzir is the rabbi of Temple Shalom synagogue in Auburn. He lived in Israel for nine years, was a member of a kibbutz and served in the Israel Defense Forces.

Katzir has taught Judaism, Biblical Hebrew and interfaith topics at the University of Southern Maine and at Bangor Theological Seminary, and he is former director of the Hate Crimes Response Project of the Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine. He frequently speaks to church, school and civic groups about Judaism, and about the need for understanding and acceptance between people of different faith backgrounds.

His book provides an overview of Jewish history and the author interprets that history as an evolving partnership with God in the ongoing project of bringing order to a chaotic world. Katzir is deeply involved in multi-faith work, and sees this book as his contribution to greater understanding between people of different backgrounds.

This program is being presented by the Friends of LPL as part of their 2013 Annual Meeting. The Friends business meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m.
