Durham citizens and Shilohites enjoyed considerable excitement Thursday, when, after long discussion and final reference to legal authorities, Mr. Smith’s house, standing on Shiloh properly, was removed with the help of neighbors and friends. It was the occasion of a big gathering and preparations had been made by the women to serve a baked bean dinner at the home of Eugene Smith, where the crowd assembled at noon The house in question has been sold to Mr. Boucher. Mr. Smith, it will be remembered, became dissatisfied with Shiloh rule some time ago and wished to remove his house which he had erected on Shiloh land. The Shiloh authorities objected to its removal and finally Mr. Smith consulted a lawyer who said he had the legal right to take it off the Shiloh property. Hence the house-moving Thursday.

EDITORIAL — There was good, sound advice for the citizens of Lewiston in the brief farewell message Adrien Anctil, retired Lewiston city treasurer-tax collector, gave at the recognition breakfast in his honor. The veteran city official urged the local business and professional men to take an active part in their city government for its improvement. Anctil pointedly remarked that the quality of some of the men elected to office over the years has left much to be desired. Improvement, he made clear, will come only as result of an interested electorate which chooses the best qualified men for public service.

The ELHS band, fresh from receiving a national honor for its outstanding performance in the Independence Day Parade in Washington, D.C., is now preparing to compete for a spot in the Inaugural Parade in January. According to junior drum major John Moore, the selection process is done by a committee formed by the party that wins the Presidential election. “We will have to send in some sort of an audition tape which will be reviewed by the committee. It will be tough to get in, but I think the fact that we’ve already marched in Washington and won the award will help us,” he said.
