NORWAY — Sholie Hanscom attended the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Program in June after being sponsored by the Stone-Smart Unit 82 Auxiliary.
Hanscom visited the Oct. 9 Legion/Auxiliary supper with her family and shared her experience with the group.
The Auxiliary sponsors one or two high school juniors for this informative and interactive program that involves learning how the government works. All attendees get involved first-hand. Norway Savings Bank has also participated in sponsoring a student in past years.
Students learn leadership skills, learn to run an office, learn public speaking and have an opportunity to create and enforce laws. Students have a chance to participate in all phases of creating and running a working government. This is a national program in which the top student leaders are invited to participate in a special Girls and Boys State Nation Program held in Washington, D.C.
Any junior from Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School is invited to consider participating in these Legion/Auxiliary-sponsored programs and can sign up by contacting the Guidance Office. Participants are eligible for a college scholarship at the local and national American Legion Auxiliary level.
