AUBURN — A car burst into flames beside Broad Street shortly after the driver pulled it over because of engine trouble Tuesday night.

When Auburn police and firefighters responded around 8 p.m., the car was engulfed in flames. Part of Broad Street near Witham Road was closed to traffic for about 30 minutes as firefighters doused the flames.

According to Auburn police Lt. Scott Watkins, Tyler Jeffrey Higgins of 135 Prospect Ave., Lewiston, noticed his vehicle was losing power.

Watkins said Higgins pulled the vehicle over and saw smoke coming from under the hood. When Higgins opened the hood he saw the vehicle was on fire and stepped away to call 911.

Investigating officer John Chamberlain reported the car was removed by Don’s Towing.
