PORTLAND (AP) — Authorities said an 80-year-old woman has been critically injured in a three-vehicle accident on Interstate 295 in Portland.

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said the vehicles smashed into one another on I-295 south shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday, causing the lanes to be closed for more than an hour.

A car driven by 62-year-old Susan Tanzer of Pennsylvania had slowed in the right lane when it was struck by a pickup truck driven by 25-year-old Jonah King of South Portland. A third vehicle driven by 53-year-old Dennis Carson of Portland then struck Tanzer’s car and overturned, ending up on its side.

Carson’s passenger, his mother Lois Carson of Portland, was injured and taken to a hospital.

The crash remains under investigation.
