MEXICO — The Board of Selectmen voted unanimously Tuesday to use money from the town’s sign budget to repair the Mexico Business District sign.

Town Manager John Madigan said the issue was originally brought to the board’s attention last year, “but we had no money in the budget at the time. Right now, we have enough money in our sign budget to replace one of the two signs.”

The sign is next to the Mexico Public Library and consists of several service panels that show which businesses and buildings are in the district. The other sign Madigan said needed repair is across from the Far East restaurant and features the name of the Citizen of the Year.

Madigan told the board that the sign next to the library is nearly illegible. “You can’t even read any of the signs on it,” he said.

“If it were up to me, I would say we do the sign in front of the library and hold off on the other one,” board Chairman Richie Philbrick said.

Madigan said he received quotes from Erik’s Design in Rumford for $246 for the sign itself, and $146 for each panel.

“Right now, we have eight service panels on the sign next to the library,” Madigan said.

Selectman Byron Ouellette told the board that it may have to change some of the service panels, including the one for the police station.

“The police station isn’t even in our business district anymore, so we can get rid of that one,” Madigan said.

He suggested the board combine the boat launch and gazebo signs because they are in the same area.

Philbrick made a motion to fix the Mexico Business District sign now and the Citizen of the Year sign next year when there is more money. The board approved.
