BELFAST — A Unity man who was the driver in a fatal high-speed crash on July 4 has been indicted by the Waldo County Grand Jury on a battery of charges that include manslaughter and aggravated criminal operating under the influence.

Alvaro Soares, 28, was driving when he crashed the vehicle on Route 220 in Thorndike. His sister and her boyfriend, Oscar Tizon Brito, were passengers. Police said that Soares was driving nearly three times the speed limit of 30 mph, according to the accident reconstruction. He slammed against two side-by-side utility poles, breaking both of them. Brito apparently died on impact.

Rescue personnel worked for two hours under a rain of sparks from a broken transformer to pull Kelley Soares away and to cut Alvaro Soares out of the wrecked vehicle. When the driver was tested several hours after the accident, his blood alcohol content was determined to be .07 percent, according to the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.

The grand jury on Nov. 15 also indicted Soares on charges of reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, aggravated driving to endanger and criminal speed.
