PARIS — Selectmen and members of the town’s Road Committee are scheduled to hear a presentation on alternative paving products at a workshop next week.
Town Manger Amy Bernard has expressed concern that the town’s comprehensive road plan only calls for repaving damaged roads with asphalt and doesn’t examine using less expensive options.
A representative from the Maine Department of Transportation is expected to demonstrate a variety of alternative paving solutions that may be less expensive than completely rehabilitating the town’s road network.
At a meeting last month, members of the Road Committee agreed to hear the alternative paving methods presentation but expressed their concern with making too many changes to the road plan.
Committee members former Town Manager Phil Tarr and engineer Rob Prue designed the 11-year road improvement plan two years ago. It was passed by voters at town meeting in 2012.
The plan calls for the town to spend between $386,000 and $521,000 a year on road projects. Most years, the expenditures fall in the $450,000 to $480,000 range.
Committee members intentionally made the plan flexible so it could be amended from year to year, depending on the town’s financial strength.
The joint workshop will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, at the Town Office.
